Omaha police officer shot during traffic stop

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ An Omaha police officer is hospitalized after being shot during a traffic stop. Police say the officer was hit by gunfire shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday on the northeast side of Omaha. Police Chief Eric Buske scheduled a news conference at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. Police say two officers were making a traffic stop. When the car stopped, a man got out and fired at the officers. At least one of the officers returned fire. The wounded officer was taken to Creighton University Medical Center. Police say the officer is in critical condition but stable. The officer's name has not been released. Police say a suspect is in custody. No other details were immediately released.
